Chinese Character Poetry Puzzle Board for Kids When my daughter was three years old, she asked me if I could make a puzzle tray for her to play with and assemble Chinese characters. I was stunned. Although Chinese characters are square-shaped, their strokes are incredibly diverse—dots, horizontal lines, downward strokes, and捺(nà), varying in length and direction. How could these be transformed into a set of unified yet flexible geometric modules? While Song and Kai typefaces have rich stroke variations, they aren’t easily compatible for combination. So, I immersed myself in experimentation, trying repeatedly over several years, until I found inspiration in artistic sans-serif typefaces: refining the strokes into simple, standardized geometric units, then embedding these modules into small grid squares, much like a tangram. It’s more than just a character puzzle tray—it’s a tangible world of Chinese characters. Children can use these modules to form characters like “天” (sky), “地” (earth), and “人” (person), or they can think outside the box and assemble a flower, a bird, or a little house. As the strokes shift beneath their fingertips, their minds leap into action during play. Literacy is no longer about rote memorization—it becomes an exploratory journey filled with creativity and imagination. For a long time, the market has had tangrams and English letter puzzles, but there has always been a lack of hands-on toys truly designed for Chinese character启蒙 (qǐméng, enlightenment). This puzzle tray is not just a toy—it’s a key: unlocking the door to Chinese characters for children, while also nurturing hands-on skills, stimulating visual thinking, and inspiring creative potential through assembling and piecing things together. This year, I finally brought this gift to life and placed it in her hands.
